If you’re like me, sometimes and maybe many times I am. I want to make sure I’m getting the best that’s available. I’ve been criticized that I eat too many veggies or that I won’t eat people’s special occasion desserts. Pickiness comes from habit, emotions and tastes learned as well as from health needed. I raised my daughter without a single casserole. There was the protein in one corner, the veggies in another and the grain in the third corner, with simple dessert on the side. That’s how I ate for my health and that is how she learned. Now when she comes home from college, even though I don’t cook that way anymore, she still prefers that. What ways do you prefer your food? Are you into what your taste buds tell you over the nutrition in the food, or are you too sexy for your own good when it comes to food for fun? Or maybe you struggle with being so healthy, you can’t have fun? What is it, what hangs you up? What makes you picky and reject that which is actually good and a balance for you?
While the above questions are worth delving into, this post caught my eye this morning, especially the part about what to feed our spirits. How picky can we get? What choices do we make?
Actually we can feed our souls a plethora of things, yet we do have a choice. Just as we have a choice to feed our bodies all kinds from nutrients to fluff, we get what we get by what we feed it. Many of us are picky eaters when it comes to the feeding of the spirit. We stop at our truth and think that is the end. Just as we think our tastes are the end all of everything….stop, I know what I like and believe! Go No Further!
Left to our own feel good choices, leaves us little depth for life’s tests, and leads us to a condition of self-sufficiency, not really believing God can act on our behalf. Most of us ignore some bitter truth words from Proverbs. “There is a way that people think is right, but it leads only to death.” Proverbs 14:12 (Easy to Read Version).
On a positive note, it is our choice. Slow down and take stock.
8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. You are sinners, so clean sin out of your lives.[a] You are trying to follow God and the world at the same time. Make your thinking pure. James 4:8 (Easy to Read Version)
Just in case any of us thinks we are above all this, take note :
23 All have sinned and are not good enough to share God’s divine greatness. Romans 3:23 (ERV) But we are all saved by grace when we come to Him and confess our pride.
34 He will humiliate those who make fun of others, but he is kind to those who are humble. Proverbs 3:34 (ERV)
We aren’t victims, but people created by the Maker of the Universe, who are given a free will, to choose Him in this lifetime above all other attractions, philosophies and gods. There is a feast at His Table. He is waiting to dine with us. He wants to give us the best of fare. Help those of us, who call ourselves after His name, to actually listen to Him by taking the time to sit before Him, hear His Voice and study His Word. Help us in our picky-ness to choose the best way and listen to Him, the author and finisher of our faith.
